Hudson Town, SC is a small predominantly black community located in St. George, SC. Hudson Town was founded in the early 1900s by Mr. Hudson and his family. The Cab Callaway family was one of the first families to own property and reside in Hudson Town on Callaway Drive. We have very little information about the history of Hudson Town. We only know that it is a forgotten black community that used to thrive with its own mom-and-pop markets, community center, and music halls for entertainment. St. George has a population of 1,771, with a poverty rate of 37.2% according to www.city-data.com. The median household income is $26,688 per year with a 30-minute one-way commute to higher waged jobs. The significant high school dropout rate and lack of resources have allowed this once thriving community to be left behind and forgotten.
Betty Carol Foundation currently renovates farmland and a farmhouse in Hudson Town to provide free and reduced food services, education, and employment for the community of Hudson Town. Our goal is to acquire more farmland in and around Hudson Town to provide opportunities for better-paying jobs by opening educational and resource centers for this community.
